How to start a private-label safety razor brand

A manufacturer's guide to launching your own safety or straight razor brand: choosing the razor, steel and finish, what to send for a quote, samples, MOQ and lead time, packaging, and the market rules your brand owns.

The short answer

Decide the razor type and head style, choose the steel and finish, then send a reference razor or a drawing to a manufacturer with your quantity and target market. Approve a paid sample before anything goes into production, settle packaging and your market's product-safety duties, then place the first run. With Smartway CNC the sample is charged at cost and credited against that first order.

1. Choose the razor

Most new wet-shave brands start with a double-edge (DE) safety razor: it takes standard DE blades your customers can buy anywhere, and it is the easiest product to explain. A straight razor suits a premium or barber range but needs honing and is a bladed article in some markets. A shavette, a straight razor that takes replaceable half DE blades, sits between the two and sells well to barbers.

For a safety razor, the head decides how it shaves. A closed comb is gentler and suits a first razor; an open comb cuts longer stubble. The blade gap sets how aggressive it feels. Settle both on the sample, not on paper.

  • DE safety razor, closed comb: the usual first product.
  • DE safety razor, open comb: for heavier beards.
  • Straight razor: premium and barber ranges.
  • Shavette: barber ranges, takes half DE blades.

2. Choose the steel and the finish

Safety razors are machined from 316L stainless steel, which resists corrosion in a wet bathroom. Straight razor blades need a hardenable stainless steel such as 440C so the edge can be honed. Brass with a plated finish is an option for a heavier, warmer-looking razor.

The finish is where a private label shows. Matte, polished and PVD-coloured finishes are available on request, and your logo can be engraved or laser marked on the handle. Weight and balance matter to wet shavers, so check them on the sample in your own hand.

3. Send a brief and get a quote

A manufacturer can quote only what it can see. The fastest quote comes from a reference razor or a drawing plus a short written brief. Smartway CNC replies within one working day (Pakistan time) with feasibility, MOQ and lead time. There are no catalog prices: every project is quoted on its own specification.

  • A reference razor, a drawing, or photos with the key dimensions.
  • Head style (closed or open comb) and blade type.
  • Steel and finish, and where the logo goes.
  • Packaging: box and insert. Blades are not supplied; if a pack goes in the box, you source it.
  • Quantity for the first run, and your target market.

4. Approve a sample, then the first run

Never place a production order on a drawing alone. Smartway makes a sample to your brief, charged at cost and credited against your first order. Production starts only after you approve it, and the approved sample becomes the standard every batch is checked against.

For the published razor samples the typical minimum order is 250 to 500 units, with a lead time of four to seven weeks. Treat these as a starting point: your quote confirms the exact figures for your design, finish and packaging.

5. Packaging and branding

A razor brand is judged in the box as much as in the hand. Plan the retail box, the insert that holds the razor, and whether a pack of blades goes in with it; blades are not supplied, so your brand sources them. Custom packaging, blister packs and custom dielines are available on request.

Your brand owns the claims on the box. Keep them to what you can prove, and mark the country of origin (Made in Pakistan) where your market requires it.

6. Know the rules your brand owns

Under private label, the brand owner or importer carries product-safety responsibility in the market where the razor is sold. These are the points to check with your own compliance adviser or customs broker before you launch:

  • EU: the General Product Safety Regulation (EU 2023/988) needs a responsible person established in the EU. That is your brand or your importer, never the overseas factory. Check whether the REACH nickel-release limit (tested to EN 1811) applies to your product.
  • UK: straight razors are bladed articles under the Offensive Weapons Act 2019, with age checks on sale and limits on home delivery.
  • USA: a razor sold for ordinary grooming is generally a consumer product, not an FDA medical device. Country-of-origin marking is required on import.
  • Saudi Arabia: products without a SASO technical regulation need a self-declaration and a shipment certificate for each consignment, applied for by the importer.
  • Duty: tariffs change often. Get the current rate for your HS code from your customs broker before you price.

7. Check the goods before they ship

Each batch is inspected against the sample you approved. Your own or a third-party pre-shipment inspection is welcome, and a factory visit or a video walkthrough is available on request. NDAs are signed on request, and your design is not sold to other buyers.

Common questions

What is the minimum order for a private-label safety razor?
For Smartway CNC's published razor samples the typical minimum is 250 to 500 units. The exact MOQ depends on the design, finish and packaging and is confirmed on your quote.
How long does it take to launch a private-label razor?
Allow time for a sample first. After you approve it, the typical production lead time for the published razor samples is four to seven weeks, plus shipping. Your quote confirms the timing.
Do I need FDA approval to sell safety razors in the USA?
Generally no. A razor sold for ordinary grooming is a consumer product rather than an FDA medical device. The brand owner or importer is responsible for confirming this and for product safety in its market.
Can I get a sample before ordering?
Yes. Samples are charged at cost and credited against your first order, and production starts only after you approve the sample.
