Private-label barber tools: shavettes, straight razors, scissors and combs

A manufacturer's guide for barber supply brands and distributors: choosing the range, steel and finish, handles and branding, what to send for a quote, samples, MOQ and lead time, packaging and the market rules your brand owns.

The short answer

Pick the tools for your range (shavettes, straight razors, hair-cutting scissors, metal combs), choose the steel, finish and handle, then send a reference tool or a drawing with your quantity and target market. Approve a paid sample before production; it is charged at cost and credited against your first order. With Smartway CNC every tool is CNC-machined and finished by hand, and MOQ and lead time are quoted per order.

1. Choose the range

Most barber brands start with one blade tool and one everyday tool, then add to the range. A shavette is the usual first product: a straight razor that takes a replaceable blade, so the barber fits a fresh blade for each client. A traditional straight razor suits a premium range and needs honing.

  • Shavette: folding, with a replaceable blade holder; takes standard half double-edge blades unless your design calls for another blade.
  • Straight razor: a hardenable steel blade that holds an edge and is honed in use.
  • Hair-cutting scissors: offset handles, a finger rest and an adjustable tension screw on the published sample.
  • Metal combs, in stainless steel or brass.
  • Your own tool, made to your drawing.

2. Choose the steel and the finish

The steel follows the job. Shavettes are made in 420 stainless steel. Hair-cutting scissors and straight razor blades need a harder grade, 440C, so the edge stays sharp. Combs can be stainless steel or brass. Other grades are quoted per project and stated on your quote.

Matte, polished and PVD-coloured finishes are available on request. Scissor edges are ground and set by hand after CNC machining, and every tool is finished by hand before it is packed.

3. Handles and branding

Barbers choose a tool by how it sits in the hand, so the handle is where a barber brand shows. Handle shape, finish, coloured handles or inserts and logo engraving or laser marking are set to your brief, on request. Check the balance on the sample in your own hand, or put it in a barber's.

4. Send a brief and get a quote

Smartway CNC replies within one working day (Pakistan time) with feasibility, MOQ and lead time. There are no catalog prices: every project is quoted on its own specification.

  • A reference tool, a drawing, or photos with the key dimensions.
  • Which tools, and the steel and finish for each.
  • Handle colour or inserts, and where the logo goes.
  • Packaging: box, pouch or case. Blades are not supplied; if a pack goes in with a shavette, you source it.
  • Quantity per tool for the first run, and your target market.

5. Approve a sample, then the first run

Production starts only after you approve a sample made to your brief. The sample is charged at cost and credited against your first order, and the approved sample becomes the standard every batch is checked against.

MOQ and lead time for barber tools are quoted per order, because they depend on the tool, steel, finish, handle and packaging. Distributors often start with a few tools in one finish and widen the range once the first run sells.

6. Packaging

Barber tools usually sell in a box, a pouch or a case, and scissors often as a cutting and thinning pair. Custom packaging is available on request, as are blister packs and custom dielines. Mark the country of origin (Made in Pakistan) where your market requires it; for Saudi Arabia, in Arabic and English.

7. Know the rules your brand owns

Under private label, the brand owner or importer carries product-safety responsibility in the market where the tools are sold. Check these points with your own compliance adviser or customs broker before you launch:

  • EU: the General Product Safety Regulation (EU 2023/988) needs a responsible person established in the EU, which is your brand or your importer, never the overseas factory. Check whether the REACH nickel-release limit (tested to EN 1811) applies to your product, and tell us the limit so we choose the steel and finish for it.
  • UK: in Great Britain the importer carries product-safety duties. Straight razors are bladed articles under the Offensive Weapons Act 2019, with age checks on sale and limits on home delivery; check how this applies to shavettes and scissors in your range.
  • USA: barber tools sold for ordinary grooming are generally consumer products, not FDA medical devices. Country-of-origin marking is required on import.
  • Saudi Arabia: products without a SASO technical regulation need a self-declaration and a shipment certificate for each consignment, applied for by the importer.
  • Duty: tariffs change often. Get the current rate for your HS code from your customs broker before you price.

8. Check the goods before they ship

Each batch is inspected against the sample you approved. Your own or a third-party pre-shipment inspection is welcome, and a factory visit or a video walkthrough is available on request. NDAs are signed on request, and your design is not sold to other buyers.

Common questions

Which barber tools can be made under my brand?
Shavettes, traditional straight razors, hair-cutting scissors and metal combs, in stainless steel or brass, or your own tool made to a drawing.
What is the minimum order for private-label barber tools?
MOQ is quoted per order, because it depends on the tool, steel, finish, handle and packaging. Send your brief and the quote states it.
Do your shavettes take standard blades?
Yes. Shavettes take standard half double-edge blades unless your design calls for another blade. The blade holder is checked on the sample you approve. Blades are not supplied: your brand sources them.
Which steel is used for barber scissors?
440C stainless steel, a harder grade that holds a sharper edge. The edges are ground and set by hand after CNC machining.
Can I get a sample before ordering?
Yes. Samples are charged at cost and credited against your first order, and production starts only after you approve the sample.
